European Championships and four year sponsorship for South West diver Tom

European Championships and four year sponsorship for South West diver Tom Issued:11/03/2008

South West Olympic contender, 13-year-old Tom Daley, has announced a four year sponsorship agreement with one of Cornwall's biggest businesses on the eve of his departure for the European Diving Championships.

bott, which manufactures storage and workshop equipment in Bude, will be supporting Tom up to and including the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Tom has been tipped as a potential Olympic medallist, and was last year voted BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year alongside household names such as Jenson Button, Wayne Rooney and Andy Murray.

Tom leaves for Holland tomorrow (Saturday 15 March) to take part in advanced training sessions before the European Diving Championships later this month.

The championships are the most high-profile contest in the sport before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and mark the beginning of bott’s association.

Tom commented: “This four year deal will help me to give my best at international competitions. I need to compete in these events to get to the highest level and fulfil my dream of winning Olympic gold for Britain. But raising the money is tough, so the timing of the agreement, just before the European Championships, could not have been better.”

bott's sponsorship of Tom is part of the company’s commitment to supporting community and sporting groups across the South West. This includes the RNLI, hockey, rugby and football teams in Bude

Clive Woodward, bott’s CEO said: “When Tom’s truly exceptional achievements came to our attention, we felt we had to support his talent and do what we could to help him compete. He is flying the flag for the South West around the world, and our sponsorship will help ensure he continues to do that and fulfil his potential.”

Since taking up competitive diving at the age of eight, Tom has gone on to win numerous contests against adults twice his age and with years of experience. He was the youngest ever under 18 National Champion and more recently, was crowned British Mens Platform Champion.

The European Diving Championships in Eindhoven take place later this month, and Tom will be competing alongside fellow Plymouth Diving Club members Sarah Barrow and Brooke Graddon.

Tom continued: “I’ve enjoyed diving ever since I took it up, and I’m pleased that my success is improving the profile of the sport. I’d urge anyone with an interest in diving to at least try it out at their local pool. They could end up hooked like me!”
