South West media company wins major national contract Issued:14/12/2006

A South West company has won a national contract to raise the profile of a UK-wide integrated public transport scheme.

Black Cat Public Relations has scooped a year-long deal to boost awareness of PLUSBUS, which offers unlimited bus travel as part of a rail ticket and is designed to make using public transport more convenient and better value.

PLUSBUS is supported by the main public transport groups in Britain and the agreement will involve gaining coverage of PLUSBUS in media across the country, working with influential industry publications and keeping MPs and local authorities updated on the scheme.

Truro-based Black Cat Public Relations was founded in October by Tim Bowcock, a former journalist who started his career at Pirate FM and BBC Radio Cornwall.

Tim commented: ?This national contract is a vote of confidence not just in Black Cat Public Relations, but in the South West?s creative industries. There?s a growing understanding that smaller, regional, PR consultancies can be more responsive and competitive than the huge metropolitan agencies who often take huge fees and deliver little of real value.?

?This is a flying start for Black Cat, which we only set up a few weeks ago, and we?re currently in discussions with a number of other local, regional and national clients.?

Tim spent five years as Communications Manager for a major UK rail operator, dealing with high profile issues and local, regional and national media.

The PLUSBUS scheme is run by Journey Solutions, an initiative established and funded by the six largest rail and bus operators in the Britain and supported by the Government.

Journey Solutions? Commercial Director, Jonathan Radley said: ?Over the coming year it is our intention to elevate PLUSBUS into a well recognised and respected national brand. I know that Black Cat Public Relations will help us deliver that important goal.?

The PLUSBUS scheme will expand in January to cover virtually every town and city in Britain with a population of more than 100,000, in addition to many smaller locations. The expansion means 32 million people will live in a PLUSBUS catchment area.

Destinations in the South West covered by the PLUSBUS scheme include Penzance, Camborne and Redruth, Truro, Penryn and Falmouth, Newquay, St Austell, Bodmin, Liskeard, Saltash and Plymouth, Totnes, Newton Abbot and Torbay, Exeter, Barnstaple, Taunton and Bridgwater.

Tim continued: ?Over half the UK population live in an area served by PLUSBUS, so the potential to help raise the profile of scheme is huge and extremely exciting. Black Cat?s job is to ensure that the benefits of the product are understood more widely among rail customers, local authorities other key stakeholders.?
