South West based recycling business expands to Midlands and NorthIssued:21/02/2008An award-winning South West recycling business has unveiled a national expansion programme to develop new processing facilities in Devon, the Midlands and North West England. The Electronic Waste Company, based in Redruth, Cornwall, is to open new centres in Exeter, Telford and a joint-venture site in Manchester to sort and prepare electrical and electronic waste for recycling and reuse. The expansion follows the decision by a European-wide waste disposal company to provide almost 13,000 tonnes of mixed end-of-life electrical equipment each year to The Electronic Waste Company. The Electronic Waste Company currently handles equipment from organisations such as councils, hospitals and schools such as IT equipment, televisions, cabling and refrigeration. Principally, this waste is disposed of by businesses but the company also handles Damian Lambkin, Managing Director of The Electronic Waste Company commented: "Our expertise and capabilities are well-known in the South West. Now, this significant expansion means we will be offering businesses in some of the UK's key industrial areas the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly method of disposing of end-of-life electronic equipment." Each of the new sites will begin processing waste from the start of April. Wherever possible, the electronic goods will be refurbished or stripped to their component parts for reuse. For equipment where this is not possible, the materials, including any hazardous chemicals, will be separated and recycled. The Electronic Waste Company, which formed in 2006, will continue to operate a "0%to landfill" policy. Damian Lambkin said: "Disposing of business waste in an environmentally friendly way used to be an option for companies. Now it's a legal requirement, and the rapid expansion of The Electronic Waste Company shows how quickly businesses are waking up to their responsibilities." Last year The Electronic Waste was recognised by the British Chambers of Commerce as the region's "Most Promising New Business" and scooped a Cornwall Sustainability Award for its work to help the region's businesses recycle.
