Expanding Cornish business is a cut above the rest

Issued:21/09/2007

A Cornish businessman has taken over a local business that has been serving the community for the last 35 years.

Ian Roberts has taken over garden machinery business, The Honda Centre, in Shortlanesend near Truro and hopes to grow the company with additional staff, a new range of products and services and much larger new premises.

Following the takeover, Ian is planning to eventually move to a more prominent position and to expand the showroom. The move would help to accommodate more makes and models and offer a wider choice to customers.

The existing company has two members of staff, and has taken on a third employee to help with the expansion, Haydn Fisher from Shortlanesend. Haydn will be joining The Honda Centre as a salesperson and will also help deal with after sales service for customers.

Ian is planning on introducing a new range of products from different manufacturers to help extend the service to customers, and as a result, change the name of the business to reflect the wider product range.

He said: ?With the takeover I want to build on The Honda Centre?s success in the last 35 years and meet customer demand for sales and service of a much wider range of makes and models of gardening equipment. In the past the Honda Centre was only able to service Honda and Echo products. We want to offer more choice and great value.?

The Honda Centre was formed by Mike Phillips in its original location in Grampound in 1972 and moved to Shortlanesend in 1982. Since then it has catered for the garden machinery needs of residential and commercial customers across Cornwall.

Ian, who took over the business from Mike Philips said: ?The Honda Centre has a loyal customer base and I am going to ensure we continue to offer the excellent service for which the business is renowned. In many ways it has been a hidden gem, so I hope to welcome more customers with our new range of products, services and extra staff. I want new and existing customers to feel that we give them the personal touch that is needed and that our expert staff are able to help out in every way possible.?

Ian also runs Shortlanesend Garage which offers sales and servicing for all makes of car.

The Honda Centre specialises in petrol and electric lawn mowers, strimmers, hedge cutters and other gardening tools. The company has a dedicated servicing team and the services to meet the needs of customers of all sizes.

The current Honda Centre showroom on School Hill in Shortlanesend is open from 9 until 5 and can be contacted on 01872 277346. More information is also available from the company website www.cornwallgardenmachinery.co.uk or by contacting sales@cornwallgardenmachinery.co.uk.
