Cornwall-based recycling firm is "most promising new business" in the regionIssued:14/09/2007The Electronic Waste Company, based in Redruth, Cornwall, has been recognised as the region's "most promising new business" in a prestigious national award scheme run by the British Chambers of Commerce. It is the first time a Cornish business has achieved this level of award. The business, which was founded in July 2006 and takes unwanted, unusable or end-of-life electronic equipment and prepares it for reuse or recycling, beat off a raft of competition to clinch the award. Damian Lambkin, Managing Director of The Electronic Waste Company said: ?It?s great to have brought this award to Cornwall ? for a business that has only been up and running for a year it is a major vote of confidence. We are a company that enables hundreds of other businesses tackle the environmental impact of end-of-life electronic equipment. We?re proud of the work we do helping businesses and helping to protect the environment too.? The Electronic Waste Company takes unwanted, unusable or end-of-life electrical equipment and prepares it for reuse or recycling. Every element of every item the firm takes is disposed of in an environmentally friendly way ? nothing is sent to landfill. Recent European regulations known as the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive means that every company which sells, manufactures, imports or rebrands electronic equipment must be a member of a ?compliance scheme? to ensure it contributes to recycling that equipment at the end of its life. The Electronic Waste Company operates the only compliance scheme in the South West of England. The company?s customers fall into three distinct categories; those that need to comply with the WEEE directive; companies which are not affected directly by the directive but still need to dispose of electronic waste and customers for resale equipment, components and recycled materials. The Electronic Waste Company?s area of operation is principally, but not exclusively, the far South West peninsula, Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset. Managing Director Damian Lambkin added, ?We?ve seen a lot of growth in the business over the last 12 months and expect to see continued growth in the future. We will be investing in new machinery to help us handle new waste streams and process more of the South West?s electronic waste locally, with a consequent environmental benefit.? The awards scheme, run by the British Chamber of Commerce is in its 4th year. Lyn Morris, Director of Operations at Cornwall Chamber of Commerce said: ?Huge congratulations are due to The Electronic Waste Company, which will be flying the flag for Cornwall in this much-contested awards scheme. Our role is to help the prosperity and competitiveness of the county?s businesses, and to have members recognised in this way shows that we are competing on a national stage.? As well as advising firms across the Westcountry, the Cornish company is also giving advice on decommissioning electrical goods to five county councils in the UK and has launched a consultancy service that is already advising businesses as far away as Italy and Canada.
