The resort in Torquay is one of just three finalists for the Excellence Through People award, one of the highest and most prestigious in the leisure and catering field. TLH Leisure Resort has been shortlisted for its work to involve its staff in business development and will be recognised at the AA Hospitality Awards, one of the key events in the industry?s calendar. It has been shortlisted for its innovative management approach over the last two years; the resort?s management developed a series of planning events called ?Focus Forum? meetings to encourage staff to provide ideas and feedback about the future direction of the business. The resort is made up of four separate hotels with a wide range of leisure facilities, and each department in each hotel was given its own dedicated ?Focus Forum?. TLH Leisure Resort?s Personnel and Development Manager, Gary Brenton, said: ?This is an enormous pat on the back for all our staff and the part they have played in keeping the resort at the top of its game. Staff involvement and engagement is crucial in moving the company forward and I know that all our staff will be delighted we have reached this stage.? The resort employs 330 permanent staff, with many more temporary staff at peak times. It has developed a national reputation for its year-round breaks and activities, including indoor bowls, dancing and entertainment weekends. Since 1998 TLH Leisure Resort has held ?Best Employment Practice? accreditation from the British Hospitality Association, which recognises the work it undertakes to attract, train and retain quality staff. Gary continued: ?As the South West?s largest hotel group, we have a responsibility to ensure that we fly the flag for the region, and offer the best possible service to our customers. We can only do that if we have the best possible staff.? The final winner will be announced on 17 September 2007 at the black-tie AA Hospitality Awards ceremony in London. The award has been organised by the Best Practice Forum in conjunction with Caterer & Hotelkeeper magazine, the Savoy Educational Trust, and the Department of Trade and Industry.
