"Missing pieces" of integrated transport jigsaw filled

Issued:03/09/2007

PLUSBUS, Britain's nation-wide integrated transport ticket offering joined-up bus and train journeys is expanding to cover 11 more destinations from Sunday, 9 September.
This month?s expansion includes some of Britain?s larger towns and cities which have previously not benefited from the PLUSBUS initiative such as Bedford, Eastbourne, Peterborough and Middlesbrough.
PLUSBUS ticketing will now be available in all rail-served towns and cities across Britain with a population of more than 100,000 people.
PLUSBUS enables train customers to add unlimited local bus travel to the start, destination, or both ends of their rail journey for a small additional fee. It is designed to reduce congestion and pollution by encouraging near door to door journeys by public transport.

The introduction of 11 extra destinations this month, covering 13 railway stations, follows the roll-out of PLUSBUS to an additional 47 stations in May this year.

PLUSBUS is administered by Journey Solutions, a partnership funded by six of Britain?s largest public transport operators; Arriva, Blazefield/Transdev, First, Go-Ahead, National Express and Stagecoach. It is also supported by the Confederation of Passenger Transport and the Association of Train Operating Companies.

Jonathan Radley, Journey Solutions? Commercial Director said: ?The number of destinations covered by PLUSBUS has grown by around 30% in a year and this September?s expansion to many of Britain?s larger cities is helping to fill the gaps in the jigsaw. PLUSBUS is going from strength to strength, and that?s good news for customers, bus and train operators, local authorities and the environment.?

In addition to the new schemes, 14 existing PLUSBUS destinations will start offering season tickets this month, making the product more attractive to rail commuters.

The growth of PLUSBUS has been supported by a national marketing campaign, including advertising on the backs of 20 million rail tickets, the distribution of almost three-quarters of a million leaflets and posters through around 1,000 train stations and coverage in on-train passenger magazines.

Jonathan continued: ?A 100% increase in PLUSBUS ticket sales and further expansion of the products availability in the past year could not have been achieved without the cooperation of bus companies, train operators and local authorities. Their assistance has been vital in introducing the scheme and ensuring staff and passenger awareness.?

More information on PLUSBUS, including a list of participating stations, is available from www.plusbus.info, while information on the benefits to public transport operators can be found at www.journeysolutions.com
