Cornish firm first "One Stop Shop" for waste electrical equipment clear-up

Cornish firm first "One Stop Shop" for waste electrical equipment clear-up Issued:20/08/2007

A Cornwall-based business, The Electronic Waste Company, has become the first in the South West to operate a "One Stop Shop" helping other companies to manage and dispose of their old electrical equipment.

The Electronic Waste Company, based in Redruth, has been granted a licence to work as an AuthorisedApproved Treatment Facility (AATF) for the treatment of electrical waste. Alongside the firm?s existing services it means The Electronic Waste Company is the first in the South West to offer companies a seamless solution to electronic waste disposal ? from advising on legal compliance to dealing with end-of-life electrical goods.

The Electronic Waste Company, founded in July 2006, takes unwanted, unusable or end-of-life electrical equipment and prepares it for reuse or recycling.

The business now employs 12 people and ensures that every element of every item is disposed of in an environmentally friendly way ? nothing is sent to landfill.

New European regulations, known as the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations, mean that every company which sells, manufactures, imports or rebrands electronic equipment must be a member of a ?compliance scheme? to ensure it contributes to recycling that equipment at the end of its life.

Research has shown that over 13,000 companies in the South West are affected by the introduction of the WEEE regulations, which came into effect in the UK last month, and The Electronic Waste Company operates the only compliance scheme in the region.

To help the firm gear-up for an expected increase in the volume of the recycling it handles, from 225 to 6,500 tonnes, the Electronic Waste Company is investing in new automated plant to test goods.

Managing Director Damian Lambkin said, ?The WEEE directive has turned electrical recycling from a ?nice to have? for businesses to a legal necessity. We are the only firm in the South West with the licences and the capacity to help companies fulfil their obligations.?

As well as advising firms across the Westcountry, the Cornish company is also giving advice on decommissioning electrical goods to five county councils in the UK and has launched a consultancy service that is already advising businesses as far away as Italy and Canada.

Damian added: ?The demand, across both the UK and the world, for good advice on how to deal with unwanted electrical goods is huge. I?m delighted to be part of a Cornish firm that is helping to lead the way in the UK and beyond.?
