New commercial vehicle enhancement centre brings jobs to South West
A new facility in North Cornwall which will prepare commercial vehicles before they enter service is expected to generate a significant boost to the local economy. The centre has been built at the UK headquarters of workshop and storage equipment manufacturer Bott Ltd in Bude, and has already added new jobs to the company’s 174-strong workforce in the town. The new facility will offer a full range of enhancements to vans and other vehicles, from modular shelving and drawers for individual tradesmen’s vehicles, to bespoke storage for the van fleets of commercial organisations and local authorities throughout the region. Its broad range of capabilities will include everything from fitting standard in-vehicle storage solutions, installing crew facilities - such as seating and mini-kitchens - in maintenance contractors’ service vehicles and converting vehicles into emergency services response units and CCTV surveillance vans. The South West operation will principally carry out enhancements to vehicles based in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset, and also support bott’s main UK vehicle fitting centre in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire and its facility in Cumbernauld, Scotland. bott’s UK client list includes blue chip telecommunications and utility companies. The 260 square metre fitting facility in North Cornwall can accommodate up to seven 3.5 tonne vehicles simultaneously, with extensive secure parking for larger fleets of up to 120 vehicles. The new centre will also apply vehicle graphics and be equipped to carry out complex electrical work, such as the installation of generators, compressors and inverters that allow in-vehicle equipment to run on 110v or 240v supply. It is adjacent to bott’s 8,000 square metre factory in Bude which already makes much of the in-vehicle equipment fitted at the company’s Scottish and Leicestershire facilities. The factory also manufactures the company’s renowned range of workshop and industrial equipment including cupboards, workbenches, tool storage and shelving. Bude is also home to bott’s research and development team, which designs specialist solutions for both workshop and vehicle applications. bott's Production Resources Manager, Simon Willshire said: “bott originally set up a central location in the Midlands to fit in-vehicle storage equipment produced in Bude. As recognition and demand for our products has grown, a new installation centre to cover the South West is an obvious move. The new centre provides a complete facility for individual and fleet vehicles in the South West. Our location in the region minimises fleet downtime … a vehicle can be lined, equipped, liveried and back to base within 24 hours.” Simon continued: “There will be a significant benefit to the South West economy. Not only have we have created new jobs in the actual facility, but the knock-on benefit is that we may need to increase staffing in the factory to manufacture the products that we will install. And because our systems allow people to work more efficiently, that should improve the productivity of our customers across the region!” bott will be hosting open days at the new facility at Bude in October.
