South West company in final stages of National Recycling Awards

One of the South West’s leading recycling companies is in the final stages of the industry’s most prestigious national award scheme.

The Electronic Waste Company, based in Redruth, has been named as a finalist in the National Recycling Awards for its work to make it easier and cheaper for businesses to recycle their electrical waste.

The company has been chosen as a finalist in the Electrical and Electronic Recycler of the Year category.

It is up against competition from two other high profile finalists. One is a division of the multi-million pound, stock market-listed PHS Group while the other is a collaboration between global household appliance manufacturer Indesit and a local authority.

The Electronic Waste Company takes electrical waste from hospitals, schools and businesses of all sizes across the South West and prepares it for reuse or recycling.

The company, which began trading in 2006 now occupies a 16,000 square foot factory in Pool Business Park and nothing the company processes is sent to landfill.

The company also runs what is known as a “compliance scheme” to enable retailers, importers and manufacturers to comply with new European WEEE legislation.

From last year, the European Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive means retailers, importers and manufacturers of electronic equipment who do not join a compliance scheme face tough penalties and substantial fines.

The Electronic Waste Company is one of only 31 companies in the country which have won a compliance scheme licence from the Environment Agency.

Ben Menadue, The Electronic Waste Company’s Systems Director said: “To have been shortlisted against these multi-million pound companies is fantastic news. It’s testament to the hard work of our staff, and the commitment of local businesses to dispose of their waste in a responsible manner. It shows that a Cornish company can compete successfully in the national market.”

The company recently achieved both the international standards ISO 9001 and 14001 for its commitment to quality and environmental management.

In the past the company and its Managing Director have been recognised in the Cornwall Business Awards, the Cornwall Sustainability Awards and by the British Chambers of Commerce.

The National Recycling Awards is backed by supermarket chain ASDA, Yell.com, steel producer Corus and respected industry journal MRW.

Chris Edwards, the National Recycling Awards Event Manager said: “The organising team behind the National Recycling Awards are please to announce that The Electronic Waste Company have been chosen as a finalist in the Repic Electrical & Electronic Recycler of the Year category. In a hard fought and well attended competition it is only the best organisations that are able to impress our wide range of judges and the short list for this category is one of the strongest we have had.”

The awards ceremony is being held at the Telford International Centre on Wednesday 12 November.
