Cornish businesses suffer from new microchip launchIssued:01/06/2007Businesses in Cornwall which depend on their websites could be hit hard by the release of a new product from global microchip giant Intel. Intel?s new computer processor, which will form the backbone of millions of PCs worldwide, has been codenamed Penryn. Its name means that within months, anyone using an internet search engine to find information on the Cornish town of Penryn may only be shown information on the new chip. Kevin Pickup, the Managing Director of i-webmarketing, a Cornish company which helps companies optimise their search engine position said: ?This is going to be a huge problem for Penryn businesses. Although the chip isn?t even on the market yet, there?s already huge buzz, and web pages relating to the Intel Penryn are starting to displace local businesses in the search results. As people who search the internet rarely look past the first couple of pages of results, the Cornish websites will effectively disappear from search engines.? The situation is likely to be even more severe for Cornish companies which pay to have their website included in search engine results, known as ?Pay-Per-Click?. They will face a bill every time someone looking for information on the Intel Penryn clicks on their link, and could see their entire budget consumed by ?false clicks?. Truro-based i-webmarketing offers free website reviews for companies, and a range of services to ensure their internet presence is optimised for search engines. For example, using appropriate keywords, developing relevant content and gaining links from other website will all help ensure that websites stand the best chance of being found by surfers. Kevin continued: ?It can take several months for web pages to be included in search engines. That means the problem for Penryn is likely to increase, and means Cornish businesses need to prepare now. Studies show that using experts such as i-webmarketing can reduce Pay-Per-Click bills by around 40%, with a far higher return on investment.? For companies which use Pay-Per-Click advertising, i-webmarketing recommend that, as first step, Penryn businesses exclude searches using the term ?Intel?. In addition, as keywords are auctioned, the price of using ?Penryn? as a keyword is likely to increase in the coming months. Teresa Timms from Visit Cornwall said: ?Cornish tourism depends heavily on the internet for bookings. Although the launch of the Intel Penryn may raise the general profile of the town it may also compromise the ability of the town?s businesses to be found on the web.?
